Tennis Kit Essentials: What Every Beginner Needs

Starting tennis? Here's the essential kit checklist — racket, shoes, balls and extras — without overspending. Central Tennis.

Starting tennis doesn't require much — but a few essentials make it far more enjoyable. Here's the beginner's checklist, in priority order.

1. A racket (the essential). A forgiving, lightweight beginner racket is the one thing you truly need. See our best beginner rackets guide and make sure the grip size fits.

2. Tennis shoes. Don't play in running shoes — the lateral movement risks a rolled ankle. A basic all-court tennis shoe is enough to start. See our best tennis shoes guide.

3. Tennis balls. Pressurised balls for the best bounce (they fade after a few sessions), or pressureless balls that last longer for casual hitting. A tube of three is plenty to begin.

4. Comfortable clothing. Any breathable sportswear works — no need for a full tennis outfit on day one.

5. The nice-to-haves

  • Overgrips — cheap comfort and better sweat handling.
  • A racket bag — protects the racket and carries your kit.
  • A vibration dampener — softens string "ping" if you prefer.
  • A water bottle and a hat for outdoor play.

What you don't need yet. A pro racket, multiple frames, expensive strings, or a big kit bag. Keep it simple, learn the game, and upgrade once you know your style.

Rough starter budget: £60–120 covers a decent racket, shoes and balls to begin.
